White Owl Film Studios, in proud partnership with REEL CANADA, will host a
special National Canadian Film Day event on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at its studio on
Wahnapitae First Nation. This free public celebration will spotlight Canadian cinema, amplify Indigenous voices, and bring together the cultural and creative communities of Northern
Ontario.
The event will include a screening of the acclaimed Northern Ontario drama The Road to
Tophet, followed by a live Q&A with director Steve Schmidt. The program will open with a
traditional smudge ceremony led by local community members, and will also feature a short
film by an emerging Canadian filmmaker.
Bringing together educators, students, Indigenous leaders, filmmakers, cultural organizations, and community members, this gathering is a tribute to the stories that shape Canada’s identity — past, present, and future.
“This event is a celebration of Canadian cinema, but also a deeper recognition of the stories that originate from this land,” says Axel Green, Public Relations and White Owl Film Studios. “By hosting it on Wahnapitae First Nation, we’re highlighting the importance of Indigenous leadership and cultural presence in the film industry.”
Hosted as part of the nationwide National Canadian Film Day programming, the event is one of many taking place across the country on April 16. Organized by REEL CANADA, the annual initiative is the world’s largest celebration of Canadian film.
